L3 - Magnificent Seven Ride Again

Last season, the Ladies Thirds faced a tough match away to Newent when only 7 players were able to make it. As we started this season playing with a full team (and subs!) we had put thoughts of such a daunting prospect behind us. But today, once more, it was an intrepid 7 who headed out to face a full Newent team.

We certainly felt a little of the pre-match nerves but new Captain Marsi was unfazed and arrived with a game strategy and mountains of encouragement. Following her lead we managed to put into play some of the skills we have been practising at training: keeping possession and short, accurate passing. The team supported and encouraged one another so that we finished feeling we had really done the best we could.

But if you imagine that a 15-0 defeat would have dampened our spirits, you would be very much mistaken, as today was a day for heroism. Unlike the Newent goalie who, to be fair, had an extremely quiet game, our new keeper Jennie faced up to attack after attack with courage, skill and even an occasional smile. Kathy used her extensive experience and incredible stamina to keep the ball away from the opposition and master-tactician Marsi consistently out-manoeuvred several adversaries at a time hanging onto the ball as long as possible. The amazing 'Back-to-Hockey' contingent turned out in force: Katherine was strong as centre back ensuring we passed the ball out and away from danger, Mhairi and Maria sprinted up and down the sides, determined to keep play in the Newent half and our resilient keeps Jennie who thoroughly deserved her Player of the Match award. So it was no points for the Thirds this week, but certainly plenty of kudos
