9 point haul for Stroud mens teams

The mens side of Stroud Hockey Club scored 9 points and 15 goals from three very different games on saturday.

The mens first hosted local rivals Wotton under Edge at in a close, strongly contested match. No goals at half time set up a tremendous battle in the second half. Steven Ship put Stroud level after they went a goal behind, and then scored a brilliant deflection in the final few minutes to snatch a well earned three points against a very competent opposition.

Stroud mens seconds travelled away to Leominster a tough proposition at the best of times but made even more difficult by only being able to field 10 players. They came away 3-1 victors with a great team performance making up for the lack of numbers.

Stroud mens threes faced another team from Wotton at home. Following on from the great performance of the first team they took a commanding lead in the game and never looked to be under much pressure. 5 goals in the first half and then another 5 in the second gave Stroud a double digit victory at the final whistle. Good goals were scored in both halves, with returning Nigel Sherwood scoring a stunning narrow angle strike into the top of the net and Steve Batt adding another to the tally. Tim Norman scored twice with another narrow angle shot and deflection at the back post. Captain Chris Bargh battled hard in the D to score a couple himself and assist with several other goals. 2 Further goals each from Dom Creech and Alex Elder left Stroud with 4 hat trick avoiders but reflected the selflessness of the play in the oppositions D.

Special mention to a great performance from the Wotton keeper playing his first game in goal, he made several great saves including from a short corner drag flick.

All the mens team sit within the middle of their respective leagues, after a varied start to the season from the first three matches.

If this weeks performance can be carried forward they will have nowhere to go but onwards and upwards.
