Poor Weather no Deterrent

Stroud Men's 2nd XI, sponsored by Ecotricity, began a windy away fixture at a relatively slothful pace on Saturday.  Their opponents certainly seemed quicker to settle and Stroud’s rather tentative start gave them a few early scares.  A fortunate touch from a Stroud stick in the D after a hit from outside the 23 gave Cirencester a somewhat lucky lead, although their pressure deserved something.  That shot in the arm proved the catalyst Stroud required and within a minute they had equalised through Jonny Matthews.  A further period of attacking play gave Stroud the lead when a speculative pass somehow bobbled past a defender for Ben Orme to score.  A 2-1 half time lead was far from comfortable.  The next goal was crucial, but as the second half began so did the gale force wind and a hailstorm.  Undeterred by these common forces of nature, Stroud appeared to pick up their game.  Within minutes of the restart, strong forward running from Tim Norman and Dom Creech led to a save by the keeper, Norman pouncing on the rebound to extend the lead.  More fine movement from Steve Shipp in the midfield and some keen passing gave Tom Sharpe an opportunity and he made it 4-1.  Stroud were certainly in control and, despite Cirencester’s willingness to play passing hockey, the visitors showed resilience in the face of attack.  Youngsters Alex Richards, Hamish Norman and Ed Golding belied their age with confident performances at the back.  The shape of the side was good and captain Rob Gleed could have few qualms about the second half.  Bryn Webber in the Stroud goal made some cracking saves to deny an increasingly frustrated home side, particularly in the second half ; the triple save most notable.  To round things off, a long pass from Sharpe was expertly held up by a defender for Orme to strike once more as the game came to a close.  This was a much needed and far stronger display of defiance from a team in transition.
