M2 Lose Narrowly

Stroud Men's 2nd XI, sponsored by Ecotricity, hosted a very organised and focused Cirencester A team on Saturday.  A young home side were up against it from the start as the visitors passed the ball around with confidence.  Out-muscled in the midfield, Stroud succumbed to Cirencester's early pressure, going a goal behind after 15 minutes.  Try as they might, Stroud failed to exert enough control to cause any real damage to the visitors' defence, despite relentless running by their two forwards.  Stroud did show cohesion at times and when they kept the ball strongly were able to put together some neat passing moves.  As they found themselves with more possession in the second half, they were hit a second time when nobody closed down a Cirencester midfielder.  Hard work was rewarded finally, Stroud winning a penalty corner, subsequently executed slickly and finished convincingly by Rob Gleed to make the score 1-2.  Cirencester played out the last few minutes by attempting to keep ball, but Stroud's unstinting efforts almost caused that to backfire.  A shame for Stroud to lose, but their young side showed some good signs and worked hard, building towards next season when those youngsters will play a more important role.
