M2 Rewarded in Tough League Start

30 September 2013 at 09:11

Stroud M2, sponsored again by Ecotricity, started their League campaign away at Cirencester A on Saturday. Always a tricky proposition, the home side were true to form, taking a very early lead. Stroud were not perturbed, however, and began to settle as the half progressed. Calum Norman and Steve Shipp worked tirelessly in the midfield and there were good signs for games to come. The forwards pushed and their hard work was soon rewarded, Andy Hines equalising with a trademark sweep from a penalty corner. Stroud then broke again, Shipp's run and pass finding Calum Norman. He coolly drew the keeper, pulled the ball left and gently guided the ball reverse stick into the open goal. Craig Breddy was kept busy in the Stroud goal and was aided in many occasions by Ian Gill, Rob Fynn, captain Rob Gleed and Ben Drury at the back. Cirencester's persistence paid off as they scored an equaliser, but Stroud were not in the mood to give up points and went ahead through a nice strike from Tom Sharpe. Several other opportunities went begging and the visitors' one goal advantage began to look rather precarious. It was enough, however, and a hard-fought 3:2 win was fully justified. Calum Norman's excellent work ethic and fine midfield work earned him the man-of-the-match award.

Vixens give good performance

21 September 2013 at 18:42

Stroud Vixens put up a great performance against an older EG side with some accurate passing, excellent marking and fine attacking play.  The defence of Freya and Katy stuck to their players like glue and Stroud, without a GK, were unlucky to concede 3 goals.  The passing through the middle of the team and into the attacking 'D' was determined and skillful.  A good performance of which the entire team can be proud.

Promising Start Continues

16 September 2013 at 09:33

Coming off the back of an impressive first game of the season (6:1 victory at local rivals Lansdown) Stroud were slow to get up to speed, gifting the home team an opening goal within the opening 5 minutes.
After some consolidation, Stroud got themselves into the game and converted their possession into shots on goal, forcing an equaliser from a deflected own goal.  5 minutes later, Dan Clifford scored with a close range volley, leaving the visitors with a comfortable 2-1 lead at the half time interval.
In the second half, Stroud stamped their authority with short, quick, cutting passes by Brad Mears, Matt Williams and Rich Fynn in central midfield, leading to many attacking opportunities for a very hard working forward line.  The dominance in possession was upgraded to short corners and a well-deserved strike by Rich Fynn rocketed past the Witney goalkeeper to take Stroud 3-1 up.
As Witney threw men forward in the latter stages of the match, a brilliant reaction stop from Kevin Sinden did nothing more than frustrate the home team.  Calum Norman look very comfortable and competent on his debut at left back, his work leading to many counter attacks from which the final goal came.  Dom Ellis looked to have wasted a good opportunity, but regained his composure to strike the fourth goal firmly past the Witney keeper from the by line.
Another brilliant result for Stroud as they build towards the start of the new League season. Next week’s game is another friendly at Stratford Park, starting at 14:00 against Swindon.

Routine without a Sparkle

16 September 2013 at 09:31

Stroud Men’s 2nd XI, sponsored by Ecotricity, beat Witney at home on Saturday, although their performance was only good in fits and starts.  Against League sides, they will need to up their game, but promising signs were there as long as they move the ball around quicker and more often.  Stroud’s passing game, keeping possession and working the gaps, is where their strengths lie.  Tom Sharpe (2), Craig Wathen and Andy Hines got on the scoresheet for the home side and many cobwebs were blown away … the inevitable stiff muscles on Sunday morning proof of that !
