M2 Go Top of the Table

Stroud Men’s 2nd XI, sponsored by Ecotricity, won a hotly-contested match on Saturday to put them on top of The Marches Division 1.  Both sides started competitively, but once Stroud got themselves in the groove, they looked the more dominant team.  A couple of penalty corners nearly gave the home side the lead before Tom Sharpe popped up at the far post to convert a cross for 1:0.  Newent fought back to level the score but Stroud went ahead once more as a powerful strike into the D was deflected into the net by a defender.  Ben Orme made it 3:1 with another fine effort to leave Stroud looking more comfortable.  Not that they had everything their own way, but comprehensive defensive work by Ian Gill and some fine stops by Craig Breddy in goal kept the visitors at stick’s length.  The next goal was key and, fortunately, Stroud got it, Sharpe getting his second of the game.  After a consolation goal from Newent, captain Rob Gleed then deflected the ball sweetly to give the home side a superb 5:2 win, putting them top of the table.
