Stroud M2 win but Lack Christmas Punch

Stroud Men’s 2nd XI, sponsored by Ecotricity, made heavy weather beating Gloucester C on Saturday.  Their team was, at least on paper, pretty strong, but they struggled to click into gear, over-complicating their play at times.  When they played the simple stuff, they looked good and the first half pressure could, indeed should, have led to several goals by the interval.  Ben Orme made the breakthrough eventually, nipping in front of the defenders as usual.  Indeed he should have put away another chance from a Tim Norman pass, but Stroud failed to extend their lead despite Tom Sharpe and Steve Shipp also coming close.  A disappointing half and a solitary goal was not enough for Stroud to feel safe and they were left with plenty to do in the second period.  An early goal from Zac Lees settled them and Shipp made it 3-0 a few minutes later.  The buffer was almost there.  Once again, however, they failed to exploit their superior pace and passing ability.  What should have turned into a rout proved unpleasantly harrowing.  With so much space to play with, Stroud often chose the narrow through-the-middle route.  Henry Bonham, Matt Watts and Rob Waite found themselves under more pressure than they thought possible before Gloucester pulled back an unlikely goal.  Stroud hung on to their 3-1 lead and the positive slant on a distinctly under-par performance, was that they can play relatively badly and still win.  They play Cirencester B this Saturday in the last League fixture before the Christmas break – a 2pm start at home.  Fingers crossed for a more positive and intelligent performance.
