L2: A win for team spirit

21 October 2018 at 19:35

For Stroud Ladies 2 playing Bretforton, a team at the top of their new league with 10 players was tough. The defence GK Ella Bullock, Charlotte Bullock, Sophie Payne, Lizzie Woods and Sian Freer blocked shot after shot. The midfield - Victoria Sharpe, Jenny Howarth and Freya Wallace chased every ball and there were moments of amazing attacking play from Leoney Colley and Esme Clarke but Bretforton found a way through time after time.  The score is not important but high fives when Stroud shot at goal and applause for Ella Bullock's saves showed great team spirit. Keep going ladies!

L3 - Magnificent Seven Ride Again

14 October 2018 at 18:08

Last season, the Ladies Thirds faced a tough match away to Newent when only 7 players were able to make it. As we started this season playing with a full team (and subs!) we had put thoughts of such a daunting prospect behind us. But today, once more, it was an intrepid 7 who headed out to face a full Newent team.

We certainly felt a little of the pre-match nerves but new Captain Marsi was unfazed and arrived with a game strategy and mountains of encouragement. Following her lead we managed to put into play some of the skills we have been practising at training: keeping possession and short, accurate passing. The team supported and encouraged one another so that we finished feeling we had really done the best we could.

But if you imagine that a 15-0 defeat would have dampened our spirits, you would be very much mistaken, as today was a day for heroism. Unlike the Newent goalie who, to be fair, had an extremely quiet game, our new keeper Jennie faced up to attack after attack with courage, skill and even an occasional smile. Kathy used her extensive experience and incredible stamina to keep the ball away from the opposition and master-tactician Marsi consistently out-manoeuvred several adversaries at a time hanging onto the ball as long as possible. The amazing 'Back-to-Hockey' contingent turned out in force: Katherine was strong as centre back ensuring we passed the ball out and away from danger, Mhairi and Maria sprinted up and down the sides, determined to keep play in the Newent half and our resilient keeps Jennie who thoroughly deserved her Player of the Match award. So it was no points for the Thirds this week, but certainly plenty of kudos

L2: First Goal in Severn 1

14 October 2018 at 15:11

Stroud Ladies 2 v Bourton was L2's tightest game this season.

In the first few minutes Clarie Crosthwaite saved a ball of the line. The first half was end to end, with new line up L2 side settling into positions. Bourton broke the deadlock, scoring from a short corner. Stroud pushed back and scored, perfectly set up by Tracey Morris, slotted home by Ellie Freer. Stroud had a second chance with a short corner just before half time, Elaine Noone's shot stopped by the Bourton keeper.

Bourton put the pressure on second half and scored two more. Final score 1-3

L1 - SECURE A DRAW

09 October 2018 at 12:07

In Stroud’s second league match of the season against Badgers, they started strongly having most of the possession in the Badgers half. There was good play down the right hand side of the pitch from Lydia Wakefield, Sarah Mace and Leonie Colley. Just before half time Emma Boyd found the back of the goal from a great pass from Katie Elder in the midfield giving Stroud the advantage at half time.

The second half saw Badgers fight back and a break away ball meant they got a goal back bringing the score to 1-1. Despite Stroud battling to find a second goal, the whistle went leaving the final score at 1-1.

MOM – Emma Boyd

Stroud lose out to Bristol& West

07 October 2018 at 16:05

A disappointing 7-3 loss didn’t reflect the game. Stroud started quickly and fell behind to a aginst the run of play goal only to see a well work short corner being upgraded to a penalty flick scoffed by dan clifford. A very well worked move later sore Rich Cartmell edginging stroud in front only to see Bristol dogged determination claw back goals to see them at half time 4-2 in front. A early second half pen flick from Alex Richards made for an exciting second half where Stroud pushing for an equalizer ended in3 more cheep goals for Bristol and west.

L2: Hard Battle v Cheltenham 3

07 October 2018 at 15:29

L2 ladies buoyed by their good performance last week, started the game frustrating Cheltenham 3's with their passing game and solid defence. Kanyana Mutalindwa with the best chance of a shot on goal. Just before the half time whistle, Cheltenham scored from a slipped short corner pass. 1-0

In the second half, Cheltenham benefitted from extra subs and experience in this higher league. They started passing around, a tiring Stroud L2, putting attack upon attack on Stroud 2. Despite great saves from Ella Bullock and great marking from star player Stella Cowan, Cheltenham scored 4 more from counter attacks and open play.
