LADIES 2nd X1 - 3 fabulous points!

30 January 2016 at 18:10

With its fabulous blend of youth and experience the Stroud Ladies 2nd X1 went all out for a 3 point win and did that with style, enthusiasm and talent.  The Cirencester 'scatter gun' attacking approach in the first 15 minutes meant that the Stroud defenders had to be on their mettle to make sure that every attacker, of which there were many, was marked.   Some fabulous defending from Ellie Mapletoft and Teigan Hurlock meant that Stroud's midfielders were able to move the ball up the pitch to Stroud's determined attackers - Freya Robb, Hannah Scott, Iona Strang and Harriet Smith.  After a goal mouth flurry it was down to Emma Crowe to strike the ball home for Stroud during the first half.  During the second half Stroud's structure, organisation and awareness of the whereabouts of team mates meant that they had the upper hand and Hannah Scott scored Stroud's second goal as part of a short corner routine.  Stroud still had to contend with some rapid, accurate and determined attack from Cirencester.  Keeper Aleasha Holder made some incredible saves throughout the game, and when Cirencester was awarded a penalty, that too missed its mark.  A fabulous result, a great performance and one to build on for the coming league games.  Fine experienced and reliable performances were given by defenders Claire Crosthwaite, Sian Freer and Pauline Edgington, and midfielders Kathy Williams, Candice Johnson and Victoria Sharpe.

Both teams felt they should have won.  Both teams felt the other team could have won.  Both teams of players came out of the game with their heads held high and a draw was a fitting result.  In what was an end to end game Stroud played some of its best hockey of the season.  Stroud's passing, marking and tackling were impressive.  Players passed the ball well, anticipated balls from their team mates and ran into spaces to pick up precise passes.  It is difficult to pinpoint particular stars - captain (and keeper) Aleasha Holder made some important saves, sweeper Claire Crosthwaite picked up all the 'escapee' Newent players and Charlotte Bullock, Sophie Payne and (an out of position) Lizzie Woods 'stuck like glue' to the forwards they were marking.  The Stroud midfield and forward line were very impressive and it was Candice Johnson that scored Stroud's goal during the first half.  Newent equalised during the second half despite the incredible efforts of the Stroud defenders to stop the ball crossing the line.  Both teams had a goal disallowed.  Another point for the Sroud team in its committment to remain in Severn Division 2.
