Sun shines for Stroud Ladies 2XI

24 November 2013 at 20:16

As the frost melted on the astro pitch, Ecotricity-sponsored Stroud took on Lansdown with the backdrop of Stratford Park in all its autumnal glory. Stroud didn’t waste any time taking control of the first half. Within minutes their strong, confident passing and solid teamwork were rewarded as Rosie Jones made it 1-0 with a great strike from open play. Lansdown had no intention of making it easy, however, and despite Stroud dominating, Lansdown were able to equalise from a well-executed short corner. Stroud kept their cool and were soon back on top, Jade Rigglesford producing an impressive finish to a great run to make it 2-1. Moments before the half time whistle, Lansdown broke through Stroud’s hard working defence to make it 2-2. In the second half Lansdown fought back hard but despite two short corners and numerous attacks on goal, they were held off by a very determined Stroud defence with bold, effective goal keeping by Helen Summers. When Stroud did break away, the forward line flew and player of the match Carrie Sanders executed a great finish to score the winning goal.

L1 Clear at the Top

19 November 2013 at 11:16

Stroud Ladies' 1st XI, sponsored by Ecotricity, travelled to a young and fit table-top sharing Cheltenham in Saturday. The battle of the leaders was a hard-fought affair, Stroud's relatively older side seemingly up against it, as the Cheltenham youngsters showed speed and skill. The visitors were undaunted and their resilience showed. Again, Stroud moved the ball around nicely and despite their forwards struggling to see much of the ball at times, came away with a tremendous 3 points to take them 3 points clear at the top of Severn Division 1. Keep up the hard work - it is clearly paying dividends.

M1 Let a Two Goal Lead Slip

19 November 2013 at 11:12

Stroud Men's 1st XI, sponsored by Ecotricity, yet again squandered a 2-goal advantage, ending up on the receiving end of a 3:2 defeat. They clearly have what it takes to do well in this division, but need to hold on for the victories they have earned.

Encouraging Teamwork from the Badgers

19 November 2013 at 11:11

Stroud's U16 Boys' side ayes a strong Cheltenham side on Saturday. Given Stroud's relatively young average age, this was a tough test for them. Slightly awe-struck and then shell-shocked as early goals went in, Stroud re-grouped at half time to produce a fantastic reply in the second half. The key to their improvement certainly lay with a strong team effort, superb passing and support from everyone. Stroud's youngsters have a tradition for passing hockey and this showed again. The lads should be proud if themselves and continue the hard work as a team.

Better Performance Despite the Loss

19 November 2013 at 11:08

Stroud M2, sponsored by Ecotricity, may have lost on Saturday but their performance was much better than in previous weeks. Gwent, something if an unknown quantity, proved worthy opponents, clearly looking for a good result and playing some quick passing hockey. The visitors took the lead in the first half, countered shortly afterwards when Ben Orme slotted the ball home from a short corner move. Both sides tried to take command of the midfield, but the evenly-matched sides meant neither team was truly dominant in that department.  As the game yo-yield from end to end, so did the score. It was Gwent, however, who ran out eventual winners, but the home side should take heart from this performance against well-drilled and strong opponents.

Stroud L2 Rewarded with Draw

17 November 2013 at 20:04

Stroud held their heads high despite the final score line of 0-0 in Saturday’s game against Gloucester. Stroud fought hard from the off, displaying good team work and persistence. Passing was strong and accurate, allowing Stroud to create some chances and some good link work meant that Stroud moved the ball confidently down the wings. Stroud’s back line was solid, and saw off the strong opposition and survived 3 attacking short corners. Stroud were unlucky not to make this a win but had done enough to earn a valuable league point. They certainly showed their hard work at training is paying off, a much better team performance ensuing. Continue with the wide running and strong support and the league wins will come.

When it rains

04 November 2013 at 19:01

Stroud B, sponsored by Ecotricity traveled to the new pitch at KLB to face a Wotton side who had had a slow start in the league but were keen to get some points.
The game got off to a good start with two fairly young sides playing some good hockey, Wotton looked slightly stronger but some keen defending and goal keeping on short corners kept the scores level until a break allowed the home side to score the first goal. The match then followed the same course as the weather and dispite Stroud's best efforts up front they were repeatedly denied and strong counter attacks by Wotton put them comfortably ahead at the break.
Debuts from Jed Stenning and Danny Sopp gave Stroud plenty of enthusiasm going forward, building on solid games from Ed Paddock, Alex Elder, John Osborn and Nigel Slater in the midfield. Several good attacks from Dom Creech, Hamish Norman, Ben Evans and Chris Bargh were unlucky not to find the net. Solid keeping from Bryn Nicol between the posts, and hardworking defending from a recovered Harvey Freer, Chris Haywood and Matt Watts tried to keep the match on an even keel but when Wotton attacked in numbers, or broke a Stroud attack they were quickly overwhelmed. After some clinical finishing at the wrong end of the pitch and a refreshing hail shower the match ended 5-0 to the home side.
Although the result somewhat flattered the opposition, Stroud played well with a less experienced team and played some good team hockey. Building on this match, Stroud can take the positive performances of the younger players with the experience of the older players to grow the side into a potent force. Sitting mid table with some tough games ahead, Stroud need to keep playing and enjoying the game, clearer skys are on the horizon.

Captains Comment: Unflattering score as they had a couple of awesome strikes. Danny Sopp and Jed Stenning had excellent debut games. Well done all but especially these two.

GOALS APLENTY IN LOCAL FRIENDLY

02 November 2013 at 13:35

Stroud Ladies 2nd X1 looked much the stronger team in this local friendly game against Painswick.  Stroud went into the lead early in the first half with a calm, unhurried goal from Victoria Sharpe after a scramble in the Painswick goal mouth.  Victoria was instrumental in the fabulous 'left hand post touch' goal scored shortly afterwards by player of the match Rosy Jones.  With only 10 players the Stroud side was worried about its stamina for the second half but a glorious goal along the back line from Jade Rigglesford and another by both Victoria Sharpe and Rosy Jones sealed the match for Stroud.  Stroud's keeper Jordan Turnbull looked impressive and made a number of excellent saves to ensure that this week the Stroud defence had a clean sheet!
