Long Journey Rewarded with 3 Points

Stroud M2, sponsored by Ecotricity, continued their League campaign away at Hereford A on Saturday.  None of the team can remember ever visiting Hereford and coming away with 3 points.  This time, after last week's disappointment of possession with few goals and a subsequent 1-1 draw, Stroud desperately wanted the win.  They started well, their extra pace showing early on.  A couple of chances went begging, before a well-struck ball into the D was controlled by Tim Norman whose pass to Ben Orme was dispatched into the goal.  Stroud continued to press, eventual man-of-the-match Scott Patient working tirelessly in midfield with Nick Hitchcroft.  One momentary lapse then led to an equaliser, reminding the visitors of the need for vigilance.  Having got used to the bobbly pitch, Stroud's defence, comprising captain Rob Gleed, Ian Gill, Ben Drury and Tom Sharpe at sweeper, were called into action on several occasions, but dealt with any marauders. Relief came when Norman collected the ball top D and gave the visitors the lead again with an interestingly mishit shot.  The extra impetus saw both Tom Freer and Jonny Matthews make strong runs into the Hereford 25.  Better control ensued and Orme came close to a second, before captain Gleed scored Stroud's all-important 3rd goal with an imperious short corner strike.  With their tails well and truly up, Stroud almost made it 4-1 but the final whistle blew as the last shot was struck, the resultant crash of the backboard all in vain.  This was a strong performance by Stroud, keeping them near the top, 2 wins and a draw a good start to the league season.
