Confident M2 Continue to Thrive

A supremely confident Stroud Men’s 2nd XI, sponsored by Ecotricity, completed the first round of League matches with a comprehensive victory over a youthful and useful Wotton side on Saturday.  With a couple of niggling injuries and two first choice players unavailable, Stroud could have buckled under the responsibility.  Not so, though, as they started with one thing in mind … a win.  Steve Shipp’s energy down the left led to a powerful cross, collected neatly by Craig Wathen, whose turn and sharp shot gave the home side an early lead.  The pressure told again, with a dominant Stroud midfield superbly supported by Ian Gill, Ben Drury and Matt Watts in defence.  Captain Rob Gleed, scored Stroud’s second with a powerful short corner strike to give Stroud a 2:0 half time advantage.
The second half saw even more control from Stroud.  Andy Murray’s man-of-the-match winning performance in midfield provided great linkage between Stroud’s players.  At times it looked as though Stroud had an extra player on the pitch, despite having to defend stoically as Wotton refused to back down.  Once Shipp had put the third goal away it meant Stroud were able to relax a little more.  That relaxation actually led to more assured passing and they looked comfortable.  Still working hard, however, Tim Norman won the ball in midfield and threaded the ball through to Ben Orme.  With the scent of the goal in his nostrils, there was never any doubt he would put the ball away for Stroud’s fourth.  Craig Breddy was a happy man in goal, with his first clean sheet of the season.  This was another fine performance, albeit not quite top drawer – enough to see them in a comfortable second, a full 7 points clear of 3rd and 4th places.
