Onwards & upwards for Stroud Ladies 2nd team

21 October 2012 at 10:07

Stroud Ladies 2XI met their toughest opposition yet this season in the form of Newent, who ended last season at the top of the division.
Stroud dominated the game and ended with a 4-1 win, another well-deserved victory. Stroud worked hard to retain possession, demonstrating good passing and communication skills. Well-motivated, supportive of one another, aware of each others' strengths and working to a common plan, it is great to see the team developing from week to week.
The first goal was powered home by Claire Crosthwaite, Hannah Scott making it 2-0 at half time. Newent came out for the second half fighting, winning more possession and the visitors broke through as Stroud conceded their first goal of the season. Newent’s defensive line had a good second half, but finally, Stroud’s collective efforts were rewarded with goals from Jade Rigglesford and Claire Crosthwaite, again from open play.

L2 On fire against the wicks

13 October 2012 at 15:25

Stroud Ladies' 2nd XI recorded their third straight League win of the season, beating Painswick 2-0 in the local derby.  The Stroud team played their usual tight, controlled, attacking hockey and had literally a dozen strikes on goal during the first half, all saved by the Painswick keeper. Carrie Sanders and Kathy Williams were tireless in midfield and Steph Woodward made some great tackles to keep the Painswick attackers away from the Stroud goal.  Captain Pauline Edgington says, "Regaining the team's structure in the second half gave Stroud the edge it needed to keep the ball in the attacking half."  Goals came Hannah Scott and Claire Crosthwaite, whose deft touches added considerably to the attacking formation.  Player of the match was Jade Rigglesford - a whisker ahead of Carrie Sanders !

Double figures for Stroud Ladies 2nd XI

06 October 2012 at 21:09

Stroud Ladies' 2nd XI continued their run of impressive wins with a 10-0 home victory over Bourton & Sherborne.
The home side dominated throughout against the young visiting team and by half time had made it 4-0.  Goals came from Nic Kelly-Davies, Hannah Scott and two Claire Crosthwaite specials.  In the second half, Stroud settled into the game on which they have worked all season ; keeping formation, passing accurately into space, using the full width of the pitch and calling well. They were rewarded with a further rush of goals, Kathy Williams again scoring from the new penalty corner routine, Victoria Sharpe scoring from a textbook run and pass from Carrie Sanders, plus 3 further goals were from open play - one from Hannah Scott and two more from Nic Kelly-Davies.
Don’t let the score line deceive you into thinking the Stroud defensive line had time to rest. Yet again, they played a vital part in the team’s success, with notable performances from Steph Woodward and Katherine Stevens.  This was another great team effort, ensuring another week at the top of the division.

Solid Start in the League for M2

01 October 2012 at 09:37

It was the 1st league game of the season for the Ecotricity sponsored Stroud mens 2nd team against an experienced Cirencester B side. Stroud started slowly in a frustrating first half with Cirencester stopping Stroud from playing their usual quick passing game. Nevertheless Stroud took a 1-0 lead into half time.
The second half performance was much improved. Quicker, shorter passing and a higher work rate off the ball opened up the tiring Cirencester defence and will and in truth the score could have been higher as the match drew to a close.
A period of dominance in the second half effectively closed the game off with three goals in quick succession from Ben Orme, Tom Sharpe and Steve Shipp. A consolation goal from Cirencester was quickly answered with another Stroud goal. The defence looked solid with notable performances from Andy Murray and man of the match Ben Drury who has stepped up to the 2nd team with ease, showing much promise for the season.
