County Success for Stroud Youngsters

Two youngsters from Stroud Hockey Club represented Gloucestershire County U15s at the West tournament held at Millfield School in Somerset on Sunday. Calum Norman and Fin Dixon helped Gloucestershire to a fine second place, only losing out on victory by a single point in the round-robin competition which pitched them against eventual winners Somerset, Avon, Dorset, The Channel Islands, Herefordshire and Devon. Fin and Calum did themselves proud with strong performances throughout the day. Calum was named captain for the tournament, a real accolade for him and Stroud Hockey Club. He scored 3 goals during the day, making him Gloucestershire’s top scorer, with Fin striking a goal himself in the final game against Herefordshire to crown a fine day’s hockey. Calum has been asked to attend the JRPC Regional Development Centre sessions to be held in Bristol during the summer. Congratulations to both of them on a fine achievement and Stroud Hockey Club look forward to helping their development next season, with Fin joining Calum in the Men’s teams after several years in the Badgers U16 setup.
Calum's inclusion in the Men's 2nd XI this season is proof, should any be needed, that the progression from Badgers to Senior hockey at Stroud is flourishing.

County Success for Calum Norman and Stroud

Congratulations to 14-year old Calum Norman who has been named captain of the Gloucestershire U15 County side to compete in the West Tournament at Millfield on 28 March 2010. All his hard work has paid dividends, as has his inclusion in the Men's 2nd XI this season, proof if some is needed that the progression from Badgers to Senior hockey at Stroud is flourishing.

Mens 1st XI Promoted Again as they Edge Out Wotton

North 2 League Winners 2008/09 - Stroud Mens 1XIStroud went away to Wotton knowing that a win would mean guaranteed promotion for Stroud but also relegation for their local rivals. The game started brightly with Stroud linking some nice passing moves and probing into Wotton's D. A breakaway from Wotton saw an overload at the back post and a goal was scored to put Wotton ahead.

Stroud responded quickly with a goal of their own from Jamie Batten. Another followed quickly when Batten made a superb break away and from the left side of the D scored an impossible reverse hit - goal of the season for the 18 year old forward.

Wotton came out for the second half with rejuvenated fight in them, and the derby feel of the game was in evidence as tempers were stretched. A well worked move from Batten and Dan Clifford was finished, with real determination, by Stroud forward Ben Orme, clattering the ball into the back board.

The defensive midfield work of Matt Waite to contain Wotton's main player earned him man of the match but even this work couldn't stop Wotton from scrambling the ball across the line at the left post. In the final 5 minutes Stroud were down to 10 men after a poor tackle from the right back led to a yellow card. This meant that the last few minutes were very tense, leading to a short corner being given to Wotton right on the final whistle. A fine save from keeper Cruickshank and a cool clearance by midfielder Brad Mears gave Stroud a thoroughly deserved victory. This is the Omega Group-sponsored firsts team's second promotion in as many seasons and sets a final game of the season with Devizes A where victory could mean a the league title if Old Bristolians slip up against Cheltenham side, Lansdown.

Bentham Indoor Hockey Entry Forms

Every year, members from Stroud Hockey Club take part in the Indoor Tournament over at Bentham Country Club in the domes between Stroud and Cheltenham.

This is a purely social tournament so no official representation from Stroud hockey club is entered. This means that any person who fancies getting together a group of their most beloved and keen hockey friends (from inside Stroud Hockey Club or from another club) and entering the tournament can do so under any weird and wacky name that springs to mind.

The tournament is due to begin on Wednesday 8th of April and will take place every Wednesday evening until July / August - it's worth getting some decent enthusiasm from players before entering as it can be difficult to field a team at times over the holiday period - however, with the tournament being such a social affair, there is generally someone from another team waiting for their game on the sideline that is happy to stand in if you are still short at game time.

There is a WIDE range of playing and umpiring abilities across all teams that take part, but the emphasis is on fun and the social aspect. Some players take it as an opportunity to try a different position on the pitch - i.e. goalies playing outfield, outfield playing in goal, defenders attacking etc...

In the past, there have been up to 3 teams run by Stroud club members. If you are interested in entering a team in the tournament and would like some more information about, please send me an email to kfynn[at]onlyoneports[dot]com and I'll forward you the details that I've been sent - closing date for your application is Friday 27th March 2009.

If you need some indoor hockey inspiration, why not attend the Indoor Hockey Championships at Birmingham NIA on Sunday 25th January - http://www.englandhockey.co.uk/competitiongroup.asp?section=322§ionTitle=Indoor+Competitions

Jack Gaskell

It is with much sadness that I write to inform everybody of the passing of Jack Gaskell, aged 93 and for many years our Club President. A man of great passion for all of the sports he enjoyed, Jack took such pleasure in his involvement with Stroud Hockey Club and still came to watch matches into his 90s. His keen eye for the game will be sorely missed but his legacy of fair play tempered by an unstinting desire for success, will live on within Stroud Hockey Club. He would be proud to see the progress made with the youngsters and the promotion of the Men's 1st XI at the end of last season. Our thoughts are also with his widow, Jean, who has also been a keen supporter of our club.

Hockey Horror Show Charity Match

Stroud Hockey Club changed shape for a Sunday lunchtime Charity Match in aid of the Cotswold Care Hospice. Opting to dress up in Rocky Horror Show garb, they donated over £100 to the local charity, scaring the local squirrels at Stratford Park in the process. It was not all blood and gore, however, with costumes including daring basques, capes and leopard-print one-pieces ! The costumes did not appear to reduce the skill level, and Stroud Hockey Club are seriously considering a change of strip for the League season, particularly given the shock effect such attire would provide. Not only did the participants provide good entertainment, the weather held out, too. With Stratford Park providing the pitch for free and the British Oak feeding the weary players afterwards, a thoroughly enjoyable lunchtime was had by all.

WANTED ! New players for the 2008-2009 Season

It is that time of year again, when holidays and cricket are put to the sword by the weather - just the right time to look at your winter sporting opportunities. Stroud Hockey Club celebrated its 80th Anniversary this year, their Men’s 1st XI finally winning promotion to North Division 2 after an agonising number of years finishing so close. With such a feather in their cap and the strength of their youngsters coming through, Stroud Hockey Club have added another Men’s side for the forthcoming season. They do need more Men to ensure the 1st XI hold their own in the higher division and also to give the new 3rd XI a sound start.

The Ladies’ 1st XI have moved sideways into Brunel Division 1, meaning less travelling and more games in the Bristol area. This will be at least as competitive as last season. Matches start on the first Saturday in September and we have a Hockey Horror Show charity event on Sunday 7 September, supported by our helpful Stratford Park Leisure Centre.

Tuesday night training starts on 12 August at Stratford Park Leisure Centre Astroturf pitch and we are seeking new players to fill the Men’s and Ladies’ sides. If you are keen to keep yourself fit or are looking for something different from gym work, why not try hockey ? You get a good workout and have a laugh at the same time. Hockey is about enjoyment as well as competitive sport. To this end, we are organising some taster sessions to coincide with our training. Come along just after 7pm and give it a try.

Ladies train from 7pm to 8pm and Men from 7:30 to 9pm. Juniors, aged roughly between 8 and 16, train between 6pm and 7pm. Boys and girls are welcome, both having a good set of fixtures throughout the season, with 1 or 2 adult players included for tactical and practical purposes. Some people just come to training on a Tuesday, so you are not under any pressure to play matches, although you will be encouraged to do so. A £10 joining fee includes training for the season – pretty good value, really ! You do pay for each match you play, on top of that.

So, if you fancy playing hockey, we have 3 Men’s sides, 2 Ladies’ sides, a Badgers Boys’ side, a Vixens Girls’ side and a Mixed Sunday side. All teams play to a good standard, are sociable and offer a slightly different angle on team sports. Why not follow in the footsteps of former Olympic goalkeeper, Simon Mason, starting the new season at Stroud Hockey Club ?

2007-2008 80th Anniversary Hockey Review

Stroud Hockey Club celebrated its 80th Anniversary this year, culminating in the end-of-season Annual Hockey Day and Dinner Dance last Saturday. Many older faces put in appearances during the day and evening celebrations and the glorious sunny day played host to some entertaining hockey ; proof indeed that Stroud Hockey Club has a strong presence in the community and much to offer. The evening celebrations included photographs, clippings and other memorabilia from past and present.

The past season saw the Men’s 1st XI finally win promotion to North Division 2 after an agonising number of years finishing so close. Everything fell into place for them this time, from day one looking a good bet to go up. The team performed consistently well and were able to hold on for victory even when odds were stacked against them. It was also fitting that coach and 1st team captain, Rob Fynn, finished the season as top scorer, an unlikely occurrence given his defensive position ! Liam Tunney showed his class as midfield maestro, winning 1st team Player of the Year, while Hermes Carlyon continued his rise to grab the Most Improved Player award.

The Ladies’ 1st XI finished the season in their highest position for several seasons, on occasions producing some excellent performances against the strongest sides. A little more consistency could see them vying for promotion next season. Sarah Tudor deservedly proved a popular Player of the Year with Jude Hudson taking the Most Improved Player award.

The Men’s 2nd XI struggled with personnel changes for much of the season, coming unstuck in matches they should have won, yet showing true class in other games. The potential is there to be a real threat next season. Andy Murray was Player of the Year, much down to his tireless presence, and Rob Gleed won Most Improved Player. With the addition of a Men’s 3rd XI next year, we are actively looking for more recruits, so contact us if you are interested in playing.

The Ladies’ 2nd XI had a fine 4-0 win in their final League game. Their fighting spirit and enjoyment of the game epitomises Stroud Hockey Club’s raison d’etre. They have struggled for a goalkeeper and for a full side this season, so anybody interested in playing next season, please contact us. Andrea Preston was Player of the Year and Faye Harding was Most Improved Player.

Junior hockey at Stroud goes from strength to strength, both boys and girls playing fine passing hockey. Many victories were forthcoming, although the Men’s Badgers side found it difficult to maintain their winning streak after Christmas. The Girls’ Vixens team took several fine scalps this year. Joe Jarman won the Badgers’ Player of the Year award for his outstanding midfield work, while the Most Improved player of the Year went to Finlay Dixon. Laura Thwaite won the Vixens’ Player of the Year, with the Most Improved Player award going to Ellen Creech. Tuesday evening Junior training consistently gets between 30 and 40 boys and girls, ranging in age from 8 or 9 to 15 or 16. Many of the boys are now ready to graduate to Men’s hockey and there will be a Men’s 3rd XI starting next season. To ensure enough players are available for this new side, we are keen to attract more male players to the club, so if you are interested, please contact us. Rich Cartmell won the Men’s Young Player of the Year and he has made the transition from Badgers to 2nd XI this season. Angharrad Roberts won the Ladies’ Young Player of the Year.

The Mixed team has played regularly this season, giving much enjoyment to those involved. Jude Hudson is clearly enjoying herself as she picked up a second award, this time for Mixed Player of the Year. Anybody interested in playing next season should contact us or let the Mixed captains know that they are keen.

Finally, Stroud Hockey Club is going from strength to strength but is always on the lookout for new players, men, women and juniors. There will be some hockey over the summer period, but Tuesday night training will not start again until the 2nd week of August. Keep your eye on our website (www.stroudhockeyclub.com) for more information. Contact Tim Norman on 01453 751885, Rob Fynn on 01453 764514 or Lesley Macdonald on 01453 750749 for further details or email tim@timnorman.plus.com.

Umpiring Courses for Adults & Juniors

Please click the acrobat logo in the article for an application form for a couple of umpiring courses running in Gloucestershire.

It is vital that as a club we have enough umpires to provide at least one umpire per game. We really should be looking at having at least two qualified umpires who are willing to umpire for the club in each of our adult teams. If you are interested in taking up this great opportunity then give Rob Fynn a call on 01453 764514 to find out more.

Juniors, if you are interested in taking up umpiring then why not do the Foundation Course. It is a great way to get into the world of umpiring and will help improve your hockey through knowing the rules properly. You will be able to help out and umpire the Badgers and Vixens matches with a little coaching from the sideline if you would like.

Mens 1st 7th October

Cheltenham B 0 Stroud Men's 1st 4

Stroud waited until the England rugby had finished to start their game. They came out fired up and put on a good performance of their own. The first goal came from Waring getting on the end of a hard ball into the D from Fynn and deflected it into the goal. The midfields passing continued to control the game for Stroud and brought another penalty corner. A reverse stick strike from Fynn put the ball in the back of the net to make it 0-2. Into the second half and the third goal came from a bit of magic from Waring who spun his defender then struck the ball deftly passed the planted keeper. With the game opening up fynn put a ball to Pearce playing on the right wing who sprinted all the way into the D with the ball and finished off his run with a diving shot to put the ball in the net. The defence of Pickard, Waite and Carlyon played fantastically in keeping some very skilled attackers at bay. Hermes Carlyon picked up man of the match for his superb efforts.

Cardiff Uni 0 Stroud Men's 1st 3

The second game of the weekend brought another good defensive performance from the Men's 1st. This time spearheaded by the forward lines retention of possession. The first half started nervously with a fit university side playing the ball nicely round the pitch. The deadlock was broken when a penalty corner was won and Mears scored from a straight strike at goal. Although Stroud continued to battle they couldn't get another goal before the break. After the break Stroud came out and played their best half of hockey this season. The lines of running and ball retention of Shipp, Batten, Clifford and Waring was superb and their constant pressure brought another short corner which Matt Waite drag flicked low though the keepers legs. The final goal of the game came from a series of eight short quick passes to work the ball into and around the right hand side of the D where Liam Tunney calmly put the ball passed the keeper, a fantastic team goal.

29th Mens 1st report

Stroud Men's 1st 4 Llanishen and Caerphilly 0

Stroud started their league season in impressive style. The forward line of Shipp, Batten, Waring and Clifford spearheaded the defensive performance which saw Stroud shut out the opposition. The organisation and work rate from the was a big leap from the disappointment of last season. The first half break through came from a short corner strike from Brad Mears. The second goal came 30 seconds before the break by Fynn off another short corner. After the half time break Stroud resumed there strong defensive play with Pickard and Carlyon. This set the grounding for Stroud's new South African Kyle Van Heerden to take the keeper on, the keeper made a save but turned round and put the ball in the back of the net. The final goal came at the end of a flowing passing move that saw Alex Waring's deflection shot pass the keeper in to the left hand corner of the gaol, the move was straight of the training ground. Next week see a double header, away on Saturday to Cheltenham and away again on Sunday to Cardiff Uni.

Badger Beating

Young Guns Go for It

Stroud Badgers 3 Cheltenham Badgers 0

Goalscorers: Calum Norman (2), Zac Lees

Chalford Building Supplies sponsored Stroud Badgers produced another solid and controlled performance, winning the 2nd League game of the season. In a match that highlighted good use of space and a desire to play entertaining hockey shown by both sides, Stroud soon got the better of Cheltenham. A goal-hungry Zac Lees opened the scoring and Stroud’s use of both flanks saw Cheltenham stretched to the limits. Victory never looked in doubt and all of Stroud’s players worked hard to keep control. Nick Sen and Joe Jarman were particularly strong in the midfield. Calum Norman’s excellent work on the right wing was rewarded with a goal midway through the first half and good positioning in the D gave him his 2nd of the match shortly before half time, following a good through pass from Lees. Although Stroud failed to extend their lead in the second half, they did more than enough to warrant victory. Fin Dixon looked sharp on the left and was well-supported by Ed McCollum at left back. Stroud continued to create chances but Cheltenham somehow managed to thwart these efforts. This was a comprehensive victory for Stroud , richly deserved and played in the right spirit throughout.

Stuttering Start for M2

Leominster Men’s 2nd XI 2 Stroud 2nd XI 1

Goalscorer: Ben Orme

Omega-sponsored Stroud suffered a second consecutive League defeat, despite an improved performance away to Leominster. Another slow start saw their opponents take a 5th minute lead which immediately put Stroud firmly on the back foot. Tim Norman and Ben Orme, however, spearheaded Stroud’s recovery and the high work-rate of the entire team saw them take control of the match. Inexplicably, Stroud failed to score more than a solitary goal, this coming from man-of-the-match Orme who pounced on a short corner save to convert with a reverse-stick strike. Stroud continued to apply pressure but Leominster scored another against the run of play. A dozen short corners must have been earned but Stroud failed to score from them. Mike Hallett did a good job in defence and there were some sparks of inspiration, Rich Cartmell and Paul Ratcliffe producing some nice interplay down the left. Ultimately, a lack of cohesion between the different parts of the team left Stroud the also-rans but there are signs that the tide will turn. It is still early days but winning ways must start soon.

Ladies 1st XI - Fine Win

STROUD LADIES 1st XI - 4

WOOTTON BASSETT 2nd XI - 2

"Best Performance Ever" - The Coach

The Stroud team was delighted when its coach confirmed what the players themselves thought - they had played some excellent hockey. The team passed the ball quickly and accurately and Wootton Bassett were unable to interrupt the continuous Stroud linking movements. The pressure applied by the Stroud forward line rewarded all 4 players with goals - Lucy Frost, Karen Whitehead, Lucy Moir and Claire Crosthwaite. The midfield line remained determined to retain possession of the ball, ensuring Stroud maintained their edge. Having had 2 friendly games cancelled during September, the team began to tire towards the end of the second half, allowing Wootton Bassett to claw back 2 quick goals. With a victory within their grasp, however, the Stroud players raised the standard of their game once more and controlled the remaining 10 minutes of the match. This gave them all 3 points and was a great start to the league season.

Mens 1st match report 23rd September

Winborne Wayfarers 3 Stroud 2

Stroud travelled to Dorset on Sunday, and unveiled their new playing kit sponsored by the Omega Group. They were playing the Wimborne Wayfarers in the first round of the Hockey Association knockout competition.

The game started with Wimborne having the upper hand. Stroud seemed to struggle to get the heads in gear after the long drive. The defensive team of Simon Pickard and Matthew Waite worked tirelessly to keep the Wimborne forward line at bay. However the forwards still managed to get some quality shots away in the direction of the goal. With the 1st team keeper Injured Sam Gilbert step in and showed why he was in the County set up at the U17 level. Sam looked cool and calm when making save after save to keep Stroud in the game.

Stroud welcomed back the newly wed Matthew Pearce to the side and with Liam Tunney and Brad Mears the midfield Trio has the legs to run any team of the park. The latter part of the first half saw Stroud beginning to keep hold of the ball and string some passes together. This pressure enabled Stroud to have a couple of forays into the Oppositions D. With 30 seconds to go before the half time hotter Wimborne broke down the right hand side and with some skill beat the defenders. The ball was put across the the left hand post where a quality finish to the left hand bottom corner beat the keeper.

Stroud came out to the second half with a greater confidence in their stride and the forward line of Waring, Shipp and Batten exploited the width of the pitch that had eluded the side in the first half. Some flowing passing moves saw shots from Waring and Batten being saved by the keeper. A shot corner was then awarded and Matthew Waite stepped up and slotted the ball in the bottom left hand corner with a perfectly executed drag flick. The belief was now in the Stroud side and with Hines rolling back the years and playing at right back the sides shape seemed to be working perfectly. Stroud were commanding the possession and creating chance after chance. The next short corner that was awarded was injected to the top of the D where Mears was waiting to stroke the ball passed the keeper, once again shaving the left hand post. Stroud where now up 2-1 with 5 minutes to go. The ball was unfortunately lost with 30 second to go and Wimborne earned a penalty corner. Their striker side stepped the on rushing Waite and slotted the ball into the goal. Extra time, Golden goal now loomed.

The extra time started and almost immediately a short corner was awarded against Stroud. In a Carbon copy of his last goal the Wimborne striker finished the game. This was an unfortunate end to what had been a good, competitive fixture between the two clubs. The umpires both deserve a mention for their efforts in making the tie an enjoyable occasion. Best of Luck to Wimborne in the next round.

Super Start from the 2nd XI

Stroud Men’s 2nd XI 2 Witney 2nd XI 1
Goalscorer: Dan Clifford (2)

On a blistering hot day, Stroud Men’s 2nd XI looked up against it with only 10 men to face a strong Witney side. Leaving a lone striker, the rest of the side took a few minutes to get themselves organised in the first game of the season. This momentary lapse was all it took for Witney to open the scoring but Stroud are built of sterner stuff and soon showed the visitors they were not going to have a walk in the park. Rich McColl’s strong presence at the back helped by Graham Morris and Mike Hallett soon built a near impregnable fortress. With Dan Clifford’s zip in midfield and youth in the form of Rich Cartmell, Stroud soon produced several attacks. Barney Franklin’s solid midfield performance was supported well by Tom Brooks and Rob Goad.
A Stroud clearance was nicely controlled by Tim Norman. Having got the call, he despatched the ball into the path of Clifford who proceeded to beat the keeper superbly before running the ball home for the equaliser. All square at half time but Stroud were in the ascendance and this continued throughout the second half. Norman’s runs kept Witney on their toes and they were unable to commit too many players forward. Stroud used the width to great effect and the determination of Cartmell, Clifford, Brooks and Goad stopped Witney from taking control. Kev Sinden was relatively untroubled in goal, particularly as his defence worked so hard. Another Clifford run saw him fouled and the resultant short corner was the last action of the game. McColl’s strike was well saved but the ball came out to Clifford on the left and he pushed the ball home for a deserved victory.

Badgers Meet their Match

Stroud Badgers 1 West Wilts Badgers 3
Goalscorer: Zac Lees
Stroud Badgers, sponsored by Chalford Building Supplies, met their match in the first game of the season. They started the match brightly enough before long establishing control. Despite this relative dominance, they failed to score, attempting to pass the ball into the goal instead of getting the shots away. Calum Norman had a fine game at right back and his promising forays and good positioning led the way for several attacks through Matt Price and Rich Cartmell. Although the moves came, the final pass was lacking and the midfield was not used effectively enough. Promising signs, however, was Stroud’s ability to switch the play and, therefore, using the flanks to attack. This stretched West Wilts and should have given Stroud several goals advantage by half time. The home side rued these missed opportunities and the skilful visitors plucked a goal almost from nowhere to lead at the break.
Stroud’s comprehensive positional play eluded them in the second half and a resolute West Wilts began to build on their fine skills. To be fair, Stroud let them play to some extent and pushed forward too much in their eagerness to pull back a goal. West Wilts extended their lead and Stroud stopped using the width of the pitch. This was their undoing and, although bolstered by Zac Lees’ goal, struggled to hit the heights of the first half. As Stroud began to play through the middle, West Wilts played controlled passing hockey and eventually scored from a short corner after a needless foul ; game over.
There were some good signs, though. Norman showed composure and vision worthy of a midfield player. Dominic Creech was strong and controlled in the first half and the midfield with Joe Jarman and Rich Cartmell showed growing maturity at times in the first half. There is work to do, however, but better to rue the missed chances now than when the Badgers’ League starts in a few weeks time.

Nothing that is said or written on the site is in anyway representative of the official views of Stroud Hockey Club or it's members!) That said, get on there and have a rant!
